Zentangle: Where Pattern Meets Presence

In the fluid boundaries of these black and white compositions, our 2-D Design 20204-2025 cohort produced a Zentangle collection that charts a course between discipline and discovery.

Like water finding its path, each piece carves its own territory, where structured geometries dissolve into organic flows, then crystallize again into precise formations.

The works speak in multiple dialects of line and space. Here, a checkerboard’s rigid authority fragments into whispered stipples; there, mathematical grids transform into cellular landscapes. Each transition writes its own story of metamorphosis, challenging our expectations of pattern and possibility. The curved edges act not as borders but as horizons, suggesting continuity beyond what we see.

These compositions reveal their secrets in layers, like archaeology of the imagination. Beneath the immediate impact of bold contrasts lie subtler dialogues: the interplay of filled and empty spaces, the tension between symmetry and disruption, the moment where pattern breaks free of its own rules. Each piece holds within it both the meditation of its making and the invitation to similar stillness in its viewing.

In their most profound moments, these works transcend their technical virtuosity. The confident mark-making and masterful tool control serve something deeper: an exploration of how structure enables freedom, how boundaries create possibility, how patience transforms simple marks into complex visual poetry. They remind us that art, like contemplation, is not an escape from rigidity into chaos, but a dance between the two.
