After studying Baroque artists such as Caravaggio, Gentileschi and Velázquez, students examined how these painters used strong contrasts of light and shadow, expressive poses, and detailed composition to create powerful scenes. In small groups, students analyzed a chosen artwork, then recreated the painting using costumes, props, and staged lighting.

In the studio, students planned each scene carefully, selecting costumes and props from what was available. When setting up the scene, they paid attention to gesture, facial expression, and arrangement of figures. They set up dramatic lighting and arranged furniture to reflect the techniques and compositional schemes used in Baroque artwork. Lastly, two students volunteered to act as photographers and a few others leant a hand in photo editing.

Throughout this process, students gained a deeper understanding of Baroque style and the decisions artists make to communicate narrative and emotion.

Do you know the titles of these Baroque artworks that inspired our students and the names of the artists who painted them?
