IMPOSSIBLE COLLAGE: Video Art & Moving Image Resolved Artwork 01

Impossible Collage invited students of Video Art & Moving Image to experiment with green screen technology, digital compositing and the playfully inventive possibilities of moving-image collage.

The project began with charcoal on paper gestural drawings. Students created expressive, energetic works, with surfaces that became containers of accumulated action, energy and time.

These drawings provided the foundations for a series of digital experiments. Using green screen techniques, students introduced random everyday objects, gestures, fragments of movement and unexpected visual encounters into their compositions.

What happens when unrelated objects, movements and images collide within the same frame?

Working through improvisation, chance and experimentation, students explored creative strategies in layering, repetition, fragmentation, scale, and highly experimental hybridization of image and sound.

The results were wonderfully unpredictable.

Some students developed strange, humorous visual narratives. Metallic fish-like creatures navigating a surreal mechanical aquatic underworld. Others created hypnotic compositions through repeated gestures, shifting scales, dissolved layers and carefully constructed soundscapes.

What began as a playful technical experiment became an investigation into the unique possibilities of moving image as an artistic medium.

These were not simply collages made using video. They were collages that could only exist through video, where movement, duration, sound and digital manipulation became essential to the artwork itself.

Layer it. Fragment it. Make the impossible happen.
